Marina Vandra
Born in 1991, lives and works in Paris

Trained in printmaking at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and the Royal College of Art in London, winner of the Lacourière Prize, Marina Vandra explores the delicate tension between medium, image, and space.

Her work questions the experience, sociology, and philosophy of place, frame, and dwelling, staging echo-like forms of objects and architecture in a refined style where gesture gives way to the sign. Blurring the lines between contemporary and decorative arts, she draws inspiration from multiple traditions, tapestry, painting, and theater set design, to develop a deeply personal approach.

Her strong sense of place and space takes shape in vast pictorial installations. Franchir, her latest painting series, extends these explorations into japanese aesthetics and architecture.

Habiter Series, 2024

These paintings refer to a reconstructed spatiality made of fragments of architecture, memories of places, objects, images, or readings. From these traces emerge signs that the artist assembles into a new composition, held at the boundary of abstraction by clues that invite the viewer to question the surface of the work, to sense its rhythm, its own music. Through minimal means and a pure treatment, the painting seems to project smells, tastes, sounds. Apart from this synesthetic play remain the obviousness of the colours and the gentle harmony of the forms.
