Agung Pramana
Born in 1998, lives and works in Ubud, Indonesia

Born in Bali, Agung Pramana builds his approach around post-colonial issues related to both History and its consequences in his social environment. Associated with DEFTO printmaking studio, he uses his technical expertise to capture the full complexity of image’s contemporary status.

His works address the issues of historical perspective, the relationship with others and different cultures, tourism, and the consequences of colonization on art and society. Overcoming these divides, he blends tradition and modernity in a personal vision, combining Pop aesthetics with iconic displaced objects from Balinese heritage. Through a play on distortion and relocation of forms, paired with the use of bold colours, he has created an immediately recognizable style.

His latest series explores the historical movements of cultural property during the colonial period, through Balinese objects in the collections of the British Museum.

Menjarah Balik British Museum Series, 2024

In this series, Agung Pramana develops a reflection on the relationship between identity, otherness, and displacement, which he had previously introduced in prints addressing the impact of tourism in Bali. Questioning the place of discourse, he « steals, » from the British Museum’s digital archives, images of anonymous-ized works collected during the colonial period and treated as expressions of a culture above any individuality. He then dilutes these forms, disconnected from their original context, on the very map of the museum. Through bold colours borrowed from Pop Art, a broader analysis of a globalized world unfolds, focusing on the fluid melting of meaning.
